Couto: The Connecting Differences
Couto: The Connecting Differences

Data/Images/mijakoto_m_no1.jpgMr. Mia Couto, a writer from Mozambique, who spoke at the Book Fair festive opening, promoted his book A River Called Time (Um Rio Chamado Tempo, uma Casa Chamada Terra).

At the Geopoetika stand, the author had a friendly get-together with the readers and signed his book. Mr. Couto is a biologist by education and he also used to work as a journalist for a while. He writes poetry and novels.

- I got the idea for this book while I was working as a biologist on an island 15 kilometers far from a city, but is a completely different world. Crossing the river daily, I realized I was not crossing the river, but passing through time. In every Mozambique man there is the link between the urban and the rural and everyone speaks another language in addition to his own. I wanted to write how to connect the differences. I think I am in a privileged position and I can write about the dividing, since I am a Portuguese in Africa, a white man among Negroes, an atheist in a very religious society. I am at the edge all the time and I can see both of them. I wanted to show by the book that Mozambique people should see themselves as a family, which can live in a mutual house, said Mr. Couto about the book A river Called Time.
